Spiderman. Batman. The Avengers.
I have a real passion for superheroes. With three of the biggest superhero movies ever made scheduled for release this year, it’s fair to say I’m quite excited. There’s something magnetic about the idea of good doing battle with evil to protect those in need. People (in most cases) using their abilities for unselfish reasons to make the world a better place. I love it!
These principles could transform the world we live in if we chose to live by them. I’m not talking about physically fighting evil people; simply using our gifts and abilities for unselfish reasons to make the world a better place. Why do I think it would be a good idea? Because it’s Biblical:
He has showed you, O man, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God.
Superheroes fight for justice. The Lord requires that we act justly…that we seek justice in the world.
Superheroes show mercy to their enemies. They are often known for their ‘refusal or strong reluctance to kill or wield lethal weapons’ (Thanks Wikipedia).
We looked at this passage a few weeks ago in our ‘Texts For Life’ series at church and it seems to me that if we lived out this passage – acting justly, loving mercy and walking humbly, we could become ‘superheroes of the faith’. What a challenge!
I pray that I will do all the Lord requires of me. I pray that I’ll become a superhero of the faith.
