Day 252: Lessons From Bond

Yesterday I went to see ‘Skyfall’, the latest James Bond movie starring Daniel Craig. For me, it was the best James Bond ever…and by some considerable distance!

Daniel Craig is the coolest man alive in my opinion; the villain was brilliant; the throwbacks to the older films were both perfectly timed and well created and of course, the fight scenes were breathtaking!  I’m not saying that I left the cinema with aspirations of becoming the next 007, but I left the film feeling inspired. Here’s why:

Bond never gives up

I don’t think this gives much of the plot away by saying that James Bond gets blown up, shot, beaten up and captured countless times; but no matter what happens, he never surrenders. He never stops pursuing his goal. This might be a movie about a fictional spy, but there’s merit in that. I love watching movies like this because it reminds me that I never, ever want to be the type of person that gives up or surrenders my goal. No matter what life throws at me I have a mission that I feel compelled to achieve, so giving up simply isn’t an option.

Bond is fiercely loyal

Despite everything he is put through, Bond’s loyalty to his country and ‘M’ never ceases. Even when faced with the prospect of death, he remains steadfast in his loyalty. I believe that loyalty is a trait that is far too undervalued but should be critical. I want to be the kind of person that is fiercely loyal to my friends, family, job and faith. I don’t want to be the type of person that is known for climbing over or squashing anyone that gets in my way in order to get what I want. There’s more to life than that.

Bond fights for a cause greater than his own

For Queen and country, James Bond regularly puts his life on the line – why? Because he believes in a cause greater than his. He believes that protecting the nation from the world’s most dangerous terrorists is worth risking his life for. The reality is that most of us won’t have to actually risk our lives in the pursuit of our dreams and visions, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t give them for it in a different way. I want to see the world changed for the better through my actions. Most of the time, it motivates me and pushes me to do more than I would do otherwise…in fact, it’s motivated a large proportion of my life so far. But sometimes I lose sight of that vision and my progress slows a little. For those occasions, I’m going to think of Bond and keep pushing on!

These are traits that I want to be known for. I’ve still got a way to go just yet though!
